Athens, exploring Varvakios Market

“A Saturday walk into Varvakios Agora or else Central Market of Athens is an absolute throwback to another era…”

By mycountry In Food for Thought, Photography, The Greeks

Varvakios market has been in business nonstop since 1886. The name was given by Varvakis, a national hero during the Greek war for independence. It is placed between Athinas, Evripidou & Sophocleous Street, just right in the middle of the Historical center of Athens. Very close to Monastiraki & Omonia metro stations, offers to this particular area thousands of colors, aromas and memories.
It is somehow, an old tradition to visit Varvakios market on Saturday morning to stock up on the best cuts, fresh fish, meat products, herbs, spices and grab a bite in one of the historic taverns, where the most popular dish is patsas!
The typical working hours of Varvakios agora is Monday - Tuesday 07:00 ΑΜ - 03:00 PM and Friday - Saturday 07:00 AM - 06:00 AM. Sunday is closed. So the best working hours I suggest for visiting Varvakios agora is from 10:00 AM to 01:00 PM.  These hours all kind of markets are full of goods and the sellers are shouting constantly to lure customers.
Since it is the oldest and most colorful markets in Greece and certainly the biggest. Existing there for more than a hundred years, makes it the most vibrant commercial point in Athens.
So, you better not miss this experience!
