Like every year since 2004, the last weekend of October, Chestnut Festival, takes place in Arna Lakonias A Festival that is known and attracts visitors from different areas around Greece.Arna is a beautiful and picturesque village placed at the eastern side of Taygetos Mountain and at 800 meters high. The environment around the village is full of chestnut, plane, apple, walnut and cherry trees.
At the village’s square you’ll see one of the biggest plane trees in Europe. In 2014 it was announced as protected memorial of nature. It has 13, 80 meters perimeter and is 30 meters high.
Despite the bad weather (rain and fog), a lot of people came to feel the atmosphere of the festival.Visitors were welcomed at the village’s square with baked (at the biggest pan in Greece) and boiled chestnuts, and of course local tsipouro.
They could buy local products (chestnuts, walnuts, apples, local sweets, honey, pumpkins, pies, tsipouro, wine, mountain tea, herbs, some of which grow only in Arna) and also handmade souvenirs and pieces of art. All these were placed on tables under the branches of a plane tree. Everyone tasted the traditional snack of the area called “pitarakia” accompanied with cheese from Voula’s (Drogari) hands.
Some of the visitors ignored the weather and ate under the rain at the traditional taverns of the village. Dance groups presented traditional dances from different areas of Greece and they dragged the visitors in a non-stop dance.
After three days of fun, we renew our date for next year (hoping for sunny days). The conclusion is that the only things that you need to have fun and good times in Arna, are good company, music, pitarakia, tsipouro and of course chestnuts…!!!
We really want to thank the local people for their generous hospitality, their treats and most of all their effort to host such a nice and well organized Festival. Have fun in this beautiful village and see you next year…!!!
